Michael Publishing produces high end, limited and exclusive fine art books in the field of fantasy. Future projects are planned to include science fiction art and comic book art. The company was started in 2013 by twin brothers Malcolm R. and Michael C. Phifer who saw a niche market that has been largely untapped and virtually ignored.
The company was launched after Michael produced an artists’ proof run of less than 100 copies of a book entitled "Doomsday: The Artists’ Perspective." This limited edition was an 8 ½'' by 11” hardcover book in a slipcase with a sewn-in ribbon page marker. It featured the artist’s name, biography, a short narrative where he discussed his work, and a signature line on the left hand page. These details were followed by a vellum coversheet on top of the full bleed (with no border or margin) print on the right hand page.
More than 70 artists contributed to this landmark creation. Due to copyright concerns, the book was not for sale; it was given as a gift to each of the participating artists. Malcolm suggested they create a book on myths and legends, similar to the Doomsday book. This began Michael Publishing.
Malcolm has a library of more than 10,000 volumes of fantasy, science fiction, and historical fiction, many of them signed. He is a well-known participant at both Worldcon™ and WFC™ when they are held in the United States and is known personally by many of the major writers in these genres worldwide. He is a retired process engineer in the fields of computers and fiber optics.
Michael, known as "The Collector," has been collecting autographed non-sport trading cards for more than 25 years and has, at 35,000+, the world’s largest signed collection of these cards. He is known worldwide for his collection. He is a member of the American Society of Published Poets™ and a retired software consultant. Many of the artists who appear in his books are personal friends whom he has known for years.
Trivia piece: The twins are both eligible as descendants of Jamestown 1607 and descendants of the Mayflower 1620 and can trace their ancestry back to all seventeen (17) of the Magna Carta barons who had lineal descendants.
The books in this series are all planned to be produced in simulated, leather hard covers in a matching slip case with a sewn-in ribbon page marker, sewn and glued. The print runs will be limited and serial numbered for each volume. These books are only sold through Michael Publishing on this website or at their booth at various comic book, book and artist conventions around the United States (see APPEARANCES, at the bottom of this page).
These are high-end, fine art books. Each print in the book will be "full bleed," meaning there is no border or margin and the color goes to the edges of the pages. There will be 100+ artists in the first book! The quality and style of these creations is unique in the market.
Although there are a number of fine art books of one, two, or four artists, you never see 160+ artists from multiple disciplines in one coffee table size book. No one has laid eyes on this book yet, as it has not gone to press; but what has been said about the concept and business plan for the book is that it is amazing, fantastic, and will exceed expectations.

-- Jim Steranko
"This is a terrific fantasy art book."
-- Gary Gianni
"This book is the most exquisitely embossed and bound hard cover book I have seen in years. It is reminiscent of the hand made books from prestigious colleges and universities alumni books that costs in the substantially more than you are retailing this book for."
-- Ed Beard Jr.
“It's a magnificent production job! Fascinating for all lovers of the weird and wonderful. I like the way that it gives a lot of young up and coming artists a chance to display their work alongside some of us 'old guys'! Well done - the book is a great accomplishment.”
-- Jim Burns
“It looks great. I’m proud to have my work included in such a brilliant array of artistic talent.”
-- Alan M. Clark
“The book is really spectacular and I'm very pleased and proud to be part of it. Beyond its content, it's a gorgeous example of book design and production with, apparently, no holds barred.”
-- Ron Miller
" A magnificent tome of awe inspiring art work all rapped up in a stunning high quality package, truly a book for the ages. All my other Artist friends jaws dropped when they saw the quality of the book and the art work housed inside it. I love showing off the book and seeing peoples amazed faces as they read at it."
-- Tom Kelly
"More than a mere art book, Lands and Legends is an essential MUST HAVE for fantasy art fans and visual art fans alike."
-- Edward Ko
“I must say it looks and feels great. I can't believe that this won't become a desirable collector’s item! Images are well reproduced on good quality stock with clever touches like having a signature area on the text page.”
-- Mark Harrison
"it looks fantastic. I couldn’t be happier. You guys did a great job. It’s one of the nicest products my art has ever appeared in. It really is an honor to be a part of it."
